Common Sense

The greatest crisis this country faces at this moment is a monumental lack of common sense.  I say this with full understanding that there are whole rafts of problems we are currently facing which seem to be completely beyond comprehension let alone solvable. But this lack of ability to function in a manner that would give the most people the most help all comes down to one simple problem; lack of common sense in dealing with the many identifiable problems that are crushing us as a nation.

Sure, lack of common sense gave us Donald Trump but he’s gone now and there is no longer an excuse for not approaching problems like healthcare, guns, crumbling infrastructure, immigration, the ecology, poverty, education and abortion, to name just a few, with at least a touch of common sense.

What prompted this long overdue rant? Well, another asshole with a gun mowed down eight people in Indianapolis today and it just seems to me that it’s time to stop blabbering about gun owner’s rights or the ridiculous interpretations of the Second Amendment and grab the problem by the balls and squeeze. For far too long we have been giving equal time to proven morons like Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Jim Jordan, Josh Hawley and Ron Johnson, men who voted against a bill that aimed to protect Asian Americans from hate crimes.  I mean, Jesus Christ! Talk about lack of common sense! If a person professes idiocy, he must be treated as an idiot.

Jim Jordan, a man whose qualifications for the Senate seat he now holds, include protecting a serial sexual predator when he was a gym teacher at The Ohio State University; yesterday attacked Dr. Anthony Fauci for recommending the wearing of face masks.  Really?  The basis of his attack on Fauci was freedom and human rights. This jackass doesn’t even know what those words mean.  It’s clear that Jordan thinks freedom to spread a deadly virus to others is his right. Anyone with any common sense would relegate Jordan and his bullshit to the dumpster but there are all too many who actually think of this monstrous clown as a functioning human being instead of the irrational stumblebum he really is and that’s exactly what I’m talking about. Common sense! Anyone who possesses it looks at Jordan and sees an angry bully being used as brain dead muscle by Mitch McConnell. Those who lack it see him as a protector of human rights; never understanding that human rights have no bearing on the discussion at hand.

It’s the same thing as the discussion of why we as a nation choose to allow a fellow citizen to be in a position to kill any number of his fellow citizens. Common sense tells us that we shouldn’t do that. Our national lack of common sense allows for any number of reasons why we should, including a constitutional amendment that reasonably interpreted has nothing to do with an individuals need to own a weapon in this century’s America. Yes, there is an argument to be had to defend every reason logical people promote to regulate or remove weapons from those who have no ability or excuse to possess them. Of course none of those arguments can follow any kind of logical trail. They run counter to common sense but are wholly endorsed by those who desire ownership of weapons that have no safe, practical use in modern society.

There will always be those among us whose engines are revved by the concept of danger. Very few of them have actually had intimate contact with real danger because once most of us who possess common sense experience danger we understand that it is usually to be avoided whenever possible. Guns are dangerous but they are exciting. One of the first things children do is turn whatever they pick up into a gun. There is a sense of power in a gun that cannot be denied and often cannot be controlled and that is reason enough to keep guns out of the hands of most people. But we don’t do it because we suffer from a national lack of common sense. Instead we make any excuse to possess guns, even guns that have no reason to exist except in war. Yes, I’m talking about automatic weapons. No hunter with any respect for his skills would ever hunt with a multi-shot weapon. But the real, common sense reason to ban weaponry from our shores is that there is no logically acceptable excuse to put our children in danger so that some bored, willful fool can indulge his need for power. That’s common sense and if you don’t recognize it you should feel bad, very bad because you are displaying sub-human tendencies that are working to the detriment of your fellow human beings and you are a disgrace to every humane principal embraced by mankind over the long history of our species.
