Dumb and Dumber Ain’t Just a Movie

The great upheaval in this year’s political spectrum, the earthquake that has catapulted Donald Trump, Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina to the tops of the GOP polls is popularly said to be a general dysfunction of those in office; specifically the House and Senate, whose inability to get anything done has led to complete revolution against all incumbents. It would go a long way to solving that problem if the voters showed their displeasure at the polls next November. It would also be nice if they showed some intelligence in their new choices.

This column is a firm believer that most if not all of congress is a quagmire, stuffed with dysfunctional idiots, all of whom are more interested in getting reelected than in doing the job for which they were elected in the first place.

But how did all these clowns get into office? Well, it seems they were elected – by the same dullards, who are now outraged by the fact that they elected dogs, and those dogs are contentedly licking their balls and gnawing on their corporate provided bones.

The moaning, groaning constituency that is now revolting against those in office and chasing after different but sometimes worse candidates, were too lazy and too stupid to bother to pay attention to what the current office holders were saying, back when they elected them. Now they are being just as lazy and stupid by not asking buffoons like Trump, Carson and Fiorina any questions at all, just because they don’t like the people they are running against. It is historically, a formula for disaster.

But there’s more than that, much more. There’s the inarguable fact that the same voters who put Boehner and McConnell in office did so because they wanted what Boehner and McConnell and others like them promised. They did so because their desires were personal, greedy and immediate and had nothing to do with building a better country, only with their bigotry and personal agendas.

Of course this is a twin-edged sword because the leaders they did elect, did not present any kind of balanced plan or set of needs that had to be dealt with in order to advance the nation’s agenda, only programs that advanced their own personal goals and expanded their own bank accounts.

This is a country that, while the greatest on earth, still has serious problems. We need a system of choosing our leaders that is not tainted by gerrymandering or the overwhelming insertion of cash. We need more and higher paying jobs, we need a better educational system by which a child may start with a functioning pre-school and if they are suited, continue on through college free of debt. We need a firm, functional legal immigration system so that we can limit illegal immigration in a sensible manner. We need an almost completely overhauled infrastructure, if our manufacturing is to continue to compete with foreign competitors, we need strong social support at the unemployment, retirement, poverty and health levels and we need a functional environmental policy that is protected from the polluters and allowed to grow in some kind of healthy basis.

None of the above have been championed by either the GOP led House or Senate. We have heard some empty vocal promises but not one iota of actual backing by anyone on the Right. Instead we get insane plans to build unnecessary walls around the country, battles to defund Planned Parenthood based on the false assumption that any of our tax money will be used to fund abortions, attacks on gay rights by people who don’t know a single gay person, huge attacks on anti-gun legislation by those who would defend the tool that is responsible for more death in this country each year than all the terrorism since WWII.

Did someone say something about twisted priorities? These non-functional clowns didn’t get in office by accident or royal decree. They were elected to those jobs by the terminally dumb, criminally lazy assholes that are now bitching about their lack of ability to lead. Yes, we need to clean house in congress, but no, we don’t have the intelligent voter pool to accomplish that. More’s the pity.
