Adam Schiff speaks about the fragility of our democracy, but he’s making a philosophic point. The reality is that democracy is fragile because it can’t protect itself and our government can’t seem to get anything done.
Every day there is a plethora of new evidence unearthed about the people who led the attack on the capitol. It starts with Donald Trump at the top of the heap and works its way down through long lists of conspirators, who plotted to overthrow a legitimate election. Yet our justice department seems either powerless to pursue it or too incompetent to know how.

A good deal of thought about the current Russian invasion of Ukraine runs to the theory that Russia has been pushed to this point because of a fear of a NATO invasion. This theory only holds water if you happen to be Vladimir Putin’s mother. How does NATO present a real threat to Russia? When was the last time any NATO member, except us, invaded anyone? The history of NATO and Russia tells us that NATO has been very accommodating to Russia and encouraged their inclusion in the G8. All the problems that could lead to security risks for Russia have actually been instituted by Russia. Georgia, Chechnya, The Donbas; all Russian aggression with no NATO retaliation. The only nation in the entirety of Europe that has been aggressive in recent history is Russia.
All the motivation for the war in Ukraine comes from nowhere but Putin’s fantasy world. In it, he envisions Russia re-establishing a new Soviet Empire, an empire that includes most of what they lost when the Soviet Union fell apart. But that will not happen because most of those countries are very happy the way things are.
The big question going forward will be; is the west smart enough to save Russia from Putin’s folly while keeping it in a state that does not allow for a repeat of it’s current mistakes. Unfortunately, the world economy cannot handle the collapse of the Russian state. That means, if we’re smart, we will keep them functioning economically while we limit their ability to do damage to any of their neighbors. I don’t think we’re up to it but who knows?

And meanwhile, down in Texas the dumbest governor in the country is busy proving his right to that title while dealing with a major catastrophe.
Greg Abbott talks about mental health and locking school doors but never mentions guns. What the hell does this moron think the shooter used to kill all these kids?
Certainly, mental health is part of the problem but the part of the problem that will save lives is reducing access to guns because that’s where the bullets come from. The only people who don’t get this are the people who don’t want to get it.
Abbott works very hard to prove his ignorance by bringing up NY, Chicago and LA. All have visibly high gun murder rates despite all three states having fairly strict gun laws. What he’s too dumb to see is that all these states are surrounded by states that have lax gun laws, so it’s easy for anyone to buy out of state and bring the guns in, which means what we really need are Federal gun laws, But Abbott is just too dense to realize he is making a case for the gun control he doesn’t want.
And as if he really wants us to be sure about his stupidity, Abbott was scheduled to attend a rally being held this weekend in Texas for the NRA. He will still appear virtually but didn’t have the guts to drag his sorry ass over in person. Of course, he’s not alone in this. Ted Cruz and Donald Trump are actually going to attend in person. Are they too stupid to understand the implications or just too insensitive to realize the effect on the grieving families? These men are why your kids aren’t safe. Why is it that in a country where 90% of the people want better background checks on gun buyers, we can’t get that to happen? Maybe it’s because certain politicians whose names sound like Trump, McConnell, Cruz and Abbott have managed to stop all attempts to make the nation safe for its children and gotten rich in the process. They are well taken care of by the gun industry and the NRA along with a certain white power groups who are accumulating guns in the hope that they can generate an armed insurrection that will fare better than the 1/6 attack on the capitol. There is only one way to overcome these men and that is to get them out of office, and there is only one way to do that in a democracy. We must vote them out.
90% of Americans want stronger gun laws. 70% of Americans want to keep Roe vs Wade. 80% of Americans want Universal Health Care. Why the hell don’t we have these things? Because for too long, too many of us have been believing the lies of the GOP and voting for them. Right now, the Republicans are looking to win based on lies about the last election and the horror of inflation. The last election is over. Biden won! Inflation, which was caused in great part by Trump’s idiotic tariffs, is already starting to slow. It won’t last more than a year or so if it’s handled correctly by the Fed. Guns, abortion and healthcare have been problems for decades and we still haven’t dealt with them because the GOP keeps waving attention getting flags in our faces and distracting us with insignificant trivia like Hillary Clinton and Hunter Biden.
It’s time to go to the polls and vote for the things we want and the way to do that is to vote against the GOP in the same percentage as we want gun safety, limited abortion and Universal Healthcare.
Yes, the GOP doesn’t want you to vote. Yes, they are putting all kinds of crap in your way. No, you can’t let them get away with it. You say it will be inconvenient. Tough shit! Get out and vote. It’s the only way we will create an America that we want to live in.
I grew up a Republican. The Republican party I grew up in bears no resemblance to the bunch of lying, thieving, degenerates that infect the halls of congress and state legislatures all over the country today.
It’s time to stop protecting politicians who think that the Second Amendment is part of the bible, a part by the way, that they have incorrectly interpreted. In November we have a chance to change this country to reflect what the majority of Americans want it to be. I know that’s not what Trump and his minions want, but what they want isn’t a democracy. What Ted Cruz and Gregg Abbott want isn’t a democracy. If it was, they wouldn’t be killing themselves to keep people from voting. If we let them have their way, we will never have the America that we were promised by our forebearers. It’s up to us.
