Pre-Debate Thoughts

For the last few decades our country has been crippled by a monolithic approach to politics. Republicans vote only for GOP ideas while Democrats vote only for progressive ideas and nothing gets done. Congress has lost any ability for each party to speak to the other.  The concept of bi-partisan legislation is anathema. This is the result of electing men and women who don’t seem to understand that being able to listen to what others are saying is a virtue that makes you a functional legislator, not as Trump or McConnell says, a loser.

We have just about finished a decade, 2010 to 2020 in which there has been no significant functional legislation passed by congress and signed by the president. That’s because those who are leading the nation are willing to accomplish nothing just so long as their political opponents don’t get anything they see as important done either. It’s a ridiculous approach to governing, generated by selfish children who spend all their time taking their balls and going home.

The last piece of important legislation passed in this country was the 2017 tax legislation and that was passed only because the GOP held both houses of congress and the presidency. What did it accomplish? It made the rich richer and the poor poorer and it began the digging of an economic hole that has been exacerbated by the effects of the pandemic. So yes, it was a major piece of legislation but it was a disaster for the nation. The previous piece of significant legislation was the financial packages passed by Obama to save the nation from the ravages of the Bush/Cheney financial crash in 2010.  So one bill in ten years and only because the party that passed it held all three branches of government. That is beyond pathetic. That and voter stupidity are what led to Donald Trump’s election. People voted for Trump because they were tired of politicians telling them what they were going to do for them and then doing nothing but collecting graft and paychecks for not doing the jobs they were elected to do. Those same people were stupid enough to believe, without checking, that a small time crook would ever deliver on ludicrous promises he made with no legitimate background of real accomplishment.  Trump was a crook before he was elected to the presidency but those who voted for him were more interested in his ability to shout “you’re fired” than they were in his felonious history.

There is more than one effective political philosophy just as there is more than one way to run a government but as soon as one side or the other closes down its ability to listen to what the other side needs and wants, it is the end of effective government and that is exactly what has happened in this country. We have elected a president that did not get a majority of the votes cast and he is now fighting desperately to hold his office with very little hope of a legitimate majority this time. To do this he is willing to undermine the selection process by which our Supreme Court justices are chosen and he is then willing to appoint those justices based only on their willingness to perpetuate his time in office. Is it any wonder that there is no moral stability in our government, when a creature completely without morals, or even an idea of what they might be, is leading it?

Republican Senators have finished their investigation of Hunter Biden and his association with Burisma. They have come to the conclusion that his job on the Burisma board, a job for which he was paid way too much money was problematic, but they could find no evidence that it in any way affected our foreign policy.

Look, anyone with even minimal intelligence knows he shouldn’t have taken the job when his old man was VP, just like they know that’s why the job was offered. Despite the shady situation surrounding the whole affair Hunter was never in a position to get them anything from the administration of which his father was a part simply because Joe wasn’t about to do anything so blatantly illegal. He is not Donald Trump.

Don’t forget, this was a GOP investigation and you can bet they were frothing at the mouth for the opportunity to nail Hunter with something. That they didn’t is clear evidence that absolutely nothing untoward went on. I’d like to see the Democrats do the exact same investigation using the three Trump brats. We would be knee deep in indictments.

Saturday Donald Trump announced his choice of Amy Coney Barrett to take RBG’s seat on the Supreme Court. That would seem to be it. But there is a problem and it’s a whopper.

The GOP wants a conservative judge to carry out their policies for the next thirty years.  Trump couldn’t give less of a damn about GOP policies; he cares only for a decision that will anoint him president after a contested election in which he doesn’t get the most votes. To that end he wants to ask all the candidates the same question or some version of it. “Will you back me in a contested election?”

Sure it’s illegal and definitely immoral to ask that unethical question but Trump couldn’t care less. The big question is, will Barrett care and how much?

If she doesn’t care, she surely isn’t what we want on the bench, regardless of whether we’re liberal or conservative. This is, after all, the biggest house of justice in the land and if the people who sit on that court don’t care that the president is a crook than we are in terrible trouble.

So Barrett must care, she must care deeply and if she does, she will tell Donald Trump to stick it, when he tells her he expects her to be loyal to him.

Those who know Barrett claim that she is a fanatic conservative with strong religious roots. They also claim that she is honest to a fault and that she believes it is her duty to get it right.

No we don’t want another conservative because that will unbalance the court too far to the right but what’s even more important is do we want a justice who understands the job and will carry it out honestly and without prejudice.

It’s a choice worthy of Sophie and one that only manifests itself because we have a president so lacking in honesty, conscience and intelligence that he is willing to abandon the nation and all its principals to keep power in his criminal hands.

Sara Fagen did a whole spiel on Sunday about Trump’s climate change policy. What climate change policy? That dumb clown doesn’t even admit there is such a thing as climate change. Fagan accuses Biden of being a socialist, which only proves she has no idea what a socialist is. Actually her aimless babbling shows she has no idea what anything is and it’s time for the producers to get someone to represent the GOP point of view that doesn’t make them all look like fools.

This was all part of a discussion about what Biden and Trump have to do Tuesday in their up-coming debate. It appears that Trump has the more difficult road. He has to show voters that he has some plan for the future that will help drag America out of the morass into which his current plans have mired it. He has to convince Americans that he has somehow figured out how to fix all the mistakes he has made in the last 4 years. It seems like an impossible task for a man who doesn’t recognize any fact of his failure.  This clown thinks he’s done a great job. He gives himself an “A”! I guess that’s for asshole.

All Biden has to do is stand quietly and point out all the lies that Trump will use to make his points. Trump will attack Biden on a personal level. That won’t work because Biden is a better person than Trump but Trump will never recognize that.

Trump has called for Joe Biden to take a drug test before the debates. What this idiot doesn’t understand is that Americans, who have some familiarity with drugs, wonder if he isn’t taking them himself. He certainly acts like he is. Then again they could only help.
